L-Carnitine in research

Levocarnitine is neither a peptide nor a powder. It is a small quaternary ammonium zwitterion — a trimethylammonium group and a carboxylate on the same seven-carbon skeleton, C7H15NO3 at 161.2 g/mol, CAS 541-15-1 — and in the solid state it is aggressively hygroscopic, which is precisely why this SKU is supplied as a solution. Ten millilitres at 500mg/ml puts five grams of material in the vial, around 31 millimoles, by some distance the largest molar quantity in the catalogue. Only the L (R) enantiomer is wanted: D-carnitine is a distinct stereoisomer, so enantiomeric identity is a real specification point rather than a formality, established by chiral chromatography or optical rotation. Why is this supplied as a liquid when the rest of the range is lyophilised?

Solid carnitine draws water out of the air fast enough that an accurately weighed portion is difficult to obtain outside a dry box. Supplying it as a 500mg/ml solution removes that step entirely: the concentration is fixed at fill and stated on the batch record.

What does the L in L-carnitine specify?

The stereochemistry — the (R) enantiomer. D-carnitine is its mirror image and a different substance; a racemic mixture is different again. The two enantiomers share a mass and behave identically on ordinary reversed-phase columns, so enantiomeric identity has to be established by a chiral method, which is why it appears as its own line on the documentation.

Does a liquid format change how the material is stored?

It changes what matters. A solution has no hygroscopicity problem but does have a shelf window and a sensitivity to contamination once the seal is broken, so the storage condition and expiry recorded against the lot are the operative figures rather than the frozen, desiccated regime used for the lyophilised items.
