How to Spot a Mismatched or Unreliable COA
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is only useful if it actually belongs to the vial in front of you and records measurable results from named methods. A mismatched or unreliable COA is one where the lot does not match the label, the dates do not line up, the method is missing, or the issuing lab cannot be identified. Check 1: Lot-to-label match
The first and most common failure is a lot mismatch. Take the lot or batch number printed on the vial and compare it, character-for-character, against the lot number on the COA. They must be identical, not merely similar.
Watch for these red flags:
- No lot number on the certificate at all — a generic COA shared across every order cannot be traced to one production run.
- A lot that differs by a character — a transposed digit or a different suffix means the document describes a different batch.

Check 2: Dates that do not line up
A real COA fixes the testing in time with at least a test date (when the analysis was run) and a report date (when the certificate was issued). Treat the dates as a cross-check:
- The report date should fall on or after the test date, not before it.
- Both dates should be present and legible, not blank fields or placeholder text.
- A report date far in the future, or a single date with no context, is a sign the template was filled in carelessly.

Check 3: A named method behind every result
Every measured value should name the technique that produced it. A purity figure should be attributed to HPLC, and an identity result should be attributed to MS / LC-MS. A number with no method behind it is unverifiable.

- A lone percentage with no mention of HPLC, no chromatogram reference and no retention time.
- An identity claim with no expected-versus-detected mass, no molecular weight and no molecular formula.

Check 4: An identifiable issuing lab
A reliable certificate states who tested the material. Look for a named testing party or signatory, and note whether the document is a supplier-issued COA or an independent lab report.
- An anonymous certificate with no lab name, no signatory and no contact detail is weak documentation.
