What does the research on TB-500 investigate?
TB-500 is the name used for a synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, corresponding to residues 17 to 23 of the parent protein and acetylated at the N-terminal end. The sequence is short - seven residues - but it contains the motif that gives the protein its best-characterised behaviour, a run of residues through which thymosin beta-4 binds actin. That binding motif is why the fragment is studied separately from the full protein: it isolates one function from a much larger molecule and lets it be examined in a cell-free system. Chemically the fragment carries a lysine and two threonines, which give it a modest positive charge and reasonable aqueous solubility. Its small size means identity confirmation is unambiguous and the analytical focus is on whether the N-terminal acetylation is present, since an unacetylated chain is a different molecule with a measurably different mass. Nothing here describes a use, benefit, dose or effect in people.
Is TB-500 legal in the UK?
TB-500 is not a licensed medicine in the United Kingdom and is not listed in any schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Selling it as a research chemical is a lawful trade; what the law restricts is the purpose it is sold for, not the fact that it is sold.
Three pieces of legislation frame that distinction. The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 make it an offence to sell an unlicensed product for human use. What does the acetyl group on the terminus change?

Why is the powder prone to picking up moisture?
Lysine-rich sequences are hygroscopic, and two of these seven residues are lysine. An opened vial left at room temperature can gain water quickly, which changes the apparent mass of the contents without any chemical change to the peptide. Letting a cold vial warm before opening reduces condensation onto the cake.
Is this a readily water-soluble peptide?
The sequence is short and highly polar — two lysines, a glutamate and two threonines — so it goes into aqueous buffer without the organic co-solvent that more hydrophobic sequences in the catalogue need. Which solvent to use is still a question for the experimental design rather than one support can answer.
