The chain in one view
Traceability is not a single document. It is a sequence of records that all point to the same production run:
- Order and SKU — the order names a SKU, which identifies the compound, the vial size, and the listing.
- Lot / batch number — the SKU is fulfilled from a specific production run, identified by a lot or batch number.
- Certificate of analysis — that run has its own COA, recording HPLC purity, LC-MS identity, expected versus detected mass, molecular formula, and the report date.
- Vial label — the lot number is printed on the label so the physical vial carries the same identifier as the paperwork.
- Dispatch record — the order, the SKU, and the lot are logged together when the parcel is dispatched after verification.
The identifier is the thread running through all five. Break it at any point and the chain stops describing the vial in your hand.
From order to SKU
An order begins as a SKU: a stable code for one listed item, such as a named compound at a stated vial size. The SKU is what links the commercial side of an order to the analytical side. It tells the fulfilment step which compound and format to pull, and it is the field a buyer can quote on an invoice request or a batch-update signup to reference a specific item without ambiguity.
A SKU on its own does not establish traceability. It identifies what was ordered, not which run fulfilled it. That second question is answered by the lot number.

Each SKU is fulfilled from a discrete production run, and each run carries its own lot or batch number.
