A COA is a batch-specific analytical record. It links a named compound to a set of measured results produced by defined test methods on a defined date. The fields a real COA should contain
A complete Certificate of Analysis is built from a small number of non-negotiable fields. If any of the core fields below are missing, the certificate cannot be tied to a specific batch and should be treated as incomplete.
1. Product / compound name
The exact name of the compound as tested, written without abbreviation where possible. A precise name lets you cross-check the certificate against the vial label, the order, and any reference data such as the CAS number (see below).

A short factual description of the material as received — for example, the physical form and colour. This is a basic confirmation field, not a quality claim.
6. Test method(s) used
Every result on a COA should name the method that produced it. "99% pure" means nothing without the method that measured it. 7. Purity result

8. Identity / mass result
The result confirming the material is the named compound, typically from mass spectrometry. Purity tells you how much of the sample is the main peak; identity tells you what that peak is. Both are needed; one without the other is incomplete.
9. Test date and report date
A COA without a date cannot be placed in time and cannot be tied to a specific run with confidence. The date also tells you how current the testing is relative to the batch.
10. Specification vs result
Better COAs show two columns: the specification (the threshold the batch was checked against) and the actual result (what was measured). This lets you see not just the number but whether it met the stated standard.
11. Laboratory / testing party and signatory

How to match a COA to your vial (lot matching)
Lot matching is the step most people skip and the step that matters most. A certificate only means something if it describes the exact item you received.
- Find the lot/batch number on the vial. It is usually printed on the label or the cap, or on the outer packaging.
- Find the lot/batch number on the COA. It should appear in a clearly labelled field near the top.
- Confirm the two strings match character-for-character. A near-match is not a match.
- Confirm the compound name matches across the vial, the COA and your order.
- Confirm the test date predates dispatch so the results belong to the batch you hold.
If the lot numbers do not match, the COA does not describe your item — even if everything else on it looks correct.
A worked example: reading a COA top to bottom
Reading in order keeps you from being distracted by a single large percentage:
- Name and CAS — Is this the compound I ordered?

A document can look official and still be worthless. Treat the following as red flags:
- No lot/batch number — cannot be matched to any specific item.

- A purity figure with no identity result — high purity of an unconfirmed substance means nothing.
